“He’s not hunting down Sachin Tendulkar” – Buttler on Root ahead of Oval Test
England wicket-keeper batter Jos Buttler believes that Sachin Tendulkar’s record is not on Joe Root’s mind. The former captain highlighted the exceptional form Root has shown with the bat since the Covid period, but also claimed that he could surprisingly end up securing the top spot.
Speaking on his YouTube channel For the Love of Cricket, Buttler said: “He’s not hunting down Sachin Tendulkar because that’s definitely not the way he plays his cricket or how he sees it.”
Root recently surpassed Australia’s Ricky Ponting in Manchester during the fourth Test and took the No. 2 spot in the elite list of most runs in Test cricket with 13,409 runs. Buttler believes that with the kind of form Root is in, the 2,512 runs needed to break Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 is achievable.
“But he is number two on an incredibly elite list, with what seems like—if he stays fit—quite an attainable kind of thing, which is absolutely mind-blowing,” he added. “He has got 21 hundreds since COVID. He is obviously in the form of his life and it is awesome to watch.”
“But he just doesn’t see it like that at all. Which I think is the great thing about him. He just loves playing and winning matches. So it’s going to be pretty cool to watch whether he stays at No. 2 or scales that Everest and goes to No. 1,” he concluded.
